Cool Blu-ray on PlayStation 3

Introduced in 2006, the Blu-ray optical disc drive is a front-end feature of PlayStation 3, with the games distributed on Blue-ray discs (BD).

BDs are simply big-capacity discs that hold up to 54 GB of content. If you're not aware yet, your dual-layer DVD format can only hold up to 8.5 GB.

The first game ever to be released using this format is the all-time best Dragon's Lair in 2006. This is a classic begun by Cinematronics in 1983 as a laserdisc video game.

Do you know how it's done during that time? The games were shipped with Pioneer laserdisc players, designed primarily to play movies (and that's where the trouble was then).

You can find the game's latest Blu-ray release here. It is crystal clear in widescreen format and sounds great even if you don't have surround sound setup.

Those who have collected a huge arsenal of CD/DVD/SACD games from old PlayStation sets can still play them on a Blu-ray disc drive (well, 40 GB systems do not play SACD).

And a plus - Blu-ray player users can access a variety of up-to-date content through the Internet using a newly developed feature called BD-Live. So you can maximize your Blu-ray Disc experience, install the latest firmware upgrade for PlayStation 3 here.

About PlayStation 3. Includes PlayStation 3 80GB system, Dualshock 3 wireless controller, free PlayStation Network membership, internet ready Wi-Fi, and 80GB of hard disk storage for all your games, music, videos, and photos. Every PS3 comes with a built-in Blu-ray player to give you the best high-definition viewing experience and pristine picture quality. Plus, the PS3 can play your entire catalog of CDs and DVDs.

Owning an iPod

Owning an iPod is something. With a popularity shared with its closest relative iPhone, it is the most coveted thing on earth even aliens would bring home to delight their own relatives from a distant planet. My seven-year old niece has an iPod, too, but probably she wouldn't have noticed her precious possession. She just loves it because of what it does, beyond the usual games she plays on another most wanted gadget of hers, which she has passed on to her younger sister. Quite lucky kids.

There are almost 30 new iPods from Apple's official launch in September last year. One of the best features of this new series is the Genius Playlist. Simply put, it is an automatic playlist organizer, and more than that - it finds the songs that go along well, so you won't have to. The nano comes in nine new colors, 8 GB and 16 GB space, and a new built-in speaker. Not to be outdone, the iPod classic now has 120 GB - that's more than an ordinary computer has. Imagine how many songs and hours of video you can store? According to Amazon, that's 30,000 songs and 150 hours of video. Huge for its size! Moreover, they have got new designs for the iPod touch that still comes in 8 GB, 16 GB and 32 GB capacities.

Big space, ease of use and the smart playlists are generally what users love about their iPods. They can rip DVDs, convert videos including YouTube videos, install third-party applications, stream music wirelessly to any iTunes library, backup their home folder, and even upgrade their old iPods, to mention some. The "walkman" of 30 years past would surely be a jurassic if placed side by side with an iPod, even without touching anything.

Here are some technical details of the latest model of iPod touch, which is our current bestseller:
  • 16 GB capacity for 3,500 songs, 10,000 photos, or 20 hours of video
  • Up to 36 hours of music playback or 6 hours of video playback when fully charged
  • 3.5-inch widescreen multi-touch display with 480-by-320-pixel resolution
  • Supported audio formats: AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible, Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV; supported video formats: H.264, MPEG-4; supported image file types: JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIFF, PSD (Mac only), and PNG
  • Playable on Mac and Windows systems
  • In the box: iPod touch 16 GB, Earphones, USB 2.0 cable, Dock adapter, Polishing cloth, Quick Start guide

My son has a "seewious" problem

Nick channel is suddenly unavailable and the most disappointed person in the world is my nearly two-year old son, Geeboy, and why?

He's been asking his mom all day for "Ming-Ming," and all she could do for him is to let him view the clips on YouTube.

Hey, who's Ming-Ming? It sounds like a cat to me. But no, Ming-Ming is a duckling and among the three heroes of the latest TV kid sensation (worldwide, probably), The Wonder Pets! from Nick Jr. The other characters are Linny the Guinea Pig and Turtle Tuck. Sailing on a "Frisbee" fly-boat made from things they find in the classroom, they travel the world to rescue animals.

What does Geeboy particularly like about Ming-Ming and the rest of the Wonder Pets? I think it is the operetta-like style of the show. Dialogues are sung by the Wonder Pets as they go about their "rescue" missions.

The characters look like clipped photos of actual animals, roughly animated to me, but a true delight to the kids around the house as I can see. Aside from the music, it's Ming-Ming's voice that appeals perfectly to my son, and the part of the song (in an episode he repeatedly watches on YouTube) where it says, "Mama... mama..." It is as if he's hearing himself calling his mom, I suppose.

Of course, the most reverberating line from kids across the globe today is: "Go Wonder Pets! Yay!"

Good thing, a local TV network airs a near-perfect Tagalog version that does not seem to reduce the spell on Filipino kids - and Geeboy is the happiest about it!

Now I'm choosing between a set of 3 Beanie Babies and the Wonder Pets flyboat, to go along with the Wonder Pets bedtime book and a music CD for Geeboy. You can check out what's pefect for your kids as well here.
