Cool Blu-ray on PlayStation 3

Introduced in 2006, the Blu-ray optical disc drive is a front-end feature of PlayStation 3, with the games distributed on Blue-ray discs (BD).

BDs are simply big-capacity discs that hold up to 54 GB of content. If you're not aware yet, your dual-layer DVD format can only hold up to 8.5 GB.

The first game ever to be released using this format is the all-time best Dragon's Lair in 2006. This is a classic begun by Cinematronics in 1983 as a laserdisc video game.

Do you know how it's done during that time? The games were shipped with Pioneer laserdisc players, designed primarily to play movies (and that's where the trouble was then).

You can find the game's latest Blu-ray release here. It is crystal clear in widescreen format and sounds great even if you don't have surround sound setup.

Those who have collected a huge arsenal of CD/DVD/SACD games from old PlayStation sets can still play them on a Blu-ray disc drive (well, 40 GB systems do not play SACD).

And a plus - Blu-ray player users can access a variety of up-to-date content through the Internet using a newly developed feature called BD-Live. So you can maximize your Blu-ray Disc experience, install the latest firmware upgrade for PlayStation 3 here.

About PlayStation 3. Includes PlayStation 3 80GB system, Dualshock 3 wireless controller, free PlayStation Network membership, internet ready Wi-Fi, and 80GB of hard disk storage for all your games, music, videos, and photos. Every PS3 comes with a built-in Blu-ray player to give you the best high-definition viewing experience and pristine picture quality. Plus, the PS3 can play your entire catalog of CDs and DVDs.
